Drivers are being urged to keep their eyes on the road and their hands on the wheel this Queen’s Birthday long weekend, with six fatalities already recorded in the capital this year, compared to five in total for the whole of 2017.
Minister for Road Safety Shane Rattenbury is reminding Canberrans to keep focused and stick to the road rules while driving, to ensure everyone arrives at their destination alive and well.
“Road accidents are traumatic not only for victims, but their family, friends and the broader community. If your phone rings while you’re driving, ignore it – it might just safe your life,” Mr Rattenbury said.
“Those caught doing the wrong thing this weekend will face hefty penalties, with double demerit points now in effect until midnight on Monday.”
A reminder to check your airbags
The reminder coincides with the ACCC’s decision to recall a further million cars fitted with defective and potentially deadly Takata airbags, bringing the total number of recalls to four million nationally.
“The ACCC has advised that around 25,000 of the most dangerous older Takata airbags are fitted to cars that are still on the road in Australia. These airbags are ticking time bombs, and should be replaced as a matter of urgency,” Mr Rattenbury said.
