A plan of action to improve eating disorder support services

Released 06/05/2018

The ACT Government will be ramping up its efforts to support those affected by eating disorders in developing an action plan to help improve levels of care, Minister for Mental Health Shane Rattenbury announced overnight.

Speaking at a fundraising effort to improve support for eating disorders in the ACT, Minister Rattenbury said the Government had committed to working with community stakeholders and the Capital Health Network to develop an Integrated Regional Mental Health Plan.

The plan aims to achieve greater coordination and effectiveness of services across primary health care, community agencies and specialist services in supporting those affected by eating disorders.

At the event, Minister Rattenbury also accepted a cheque on behalf of the ACT Government from Ms Jacqui Brooker, whose Kokoda 2018 fundraising effort raised $13,000 towards eating disorder support services.

“This is a fantastic achievement, and I would again like to thank Jacqui for her incredible efforts in hiking the Kokoda trail for this great cause.

“This generous donation will be put towards engaging specialists in this field to train more health professionals to gain the skills necessary to support those affected by eating disorders. This will support our continued efforts to ensure the right level of care is available to those in need, at the right time.

“The existence of campaigns such as Kokoda, show a growing recognition in the community about the need for better support around this complex issue.”

At a local level, approximately nine per cent of the Australian population are estimated to be affected by eating disorders, with approximately fifteen per cent of Australian women experiencing eating disorder during their lifetime.
