Still looking for a New Year’s resolution?

Released 25/07/2017

If you’re still looking for a New Year’s resolution, why not aim to reduce your impact on the planet, Minister for Climate Change and Sustainability Shane Rattenbury said today.

“All around the world we are seeing the impacts of climate change. We are already experiencing more intense floods and heatwaves, plant and animal species are being lost, our ice caps are melting and peoples' livelihoods, property and health are being put at risk.

“Canberra is bracing itself for a hot summer, following a series of hottest years on record with 2016 turning out to be one of the hottest so far,” Minister Rattenbury said.

“Fortunately it’s not too late to do something about it. By making simple changes to reduce the energy you use you can make a difference to the planet, and save money by being more efficient with your energy use.

“There are a number of simple things you can do at home to save energy during what is already shaping up to be another hot summer.

“Most of these are really easy to do such as washing clothes using cold water and switching appliances off at the wall when they are not in use.”

Tips for keeping your house cool in summer include:

  • if you are using air-conditioning over summer, shut doors to rooms that do not need to be cooled;
  • close curtains/vertical drapes during the day, and instead of using the air-conditioner at night, open up all the windows to ventilate your home with cool night air;
  • wash clothes using cold water and only when the washing machine is full;
  • use a clothesline rather than the dryer; and
  • power down energy hungry appliances like amplifiers, TVs and games consoles which can produce a lot of heat, even when in standby mode.
