Saving energy means cutting costs for those in need: Energy efficiency program provides support to 1,000 Canberra homes

Released 25/07/2017

1,000 Canberra homes have now benefited from the Actsmart Home Energy Efficiency Program, Minister for Climate Change and Sustainability Shane Rattenbury said today. The program provides helpful tips and products for low income households to reduce their energy and water bills.

“It’s important that we provide support to those households in our community who need it most,” Mr Rattenbury said. “Energy efficiency is one way to achieve this, especially as winter is now well underway.

“Under the program, an energy efficiency assessor makes a home visit to identify ways the household can reduce their energy and water consumption, save money and improve the comfort of their home.

“We know that the increasing cost of electricity, gas and water are a real cause of financial stress for people living on a low income.

This a free service that offers practical ways for low income households to reduce their energy and water bills as well as items like shower timers and draught proofing for doors and windows,” Mr Rattenbury added.

Energy efficiency assessors can provide:

  • an assessment of a household's energy and water needs
  • advice and education on how to save energy and water
  • an information kit with energy savings tips
  • an energy saving kit including a shower timer and thermometer
  • a heated throw rug
  • draught proofing
