NRMA-ACT Road Safety Trust issues final grants

Released 25/07/2017

The ACT Government will continue the legacy of the NRMA-ACT Road Safety Trust, which today issued its final grants, Minister for Road Safety Shane Rattenbury said today.

“Over the past 25 years, the Trust has been responsible for distributing more than $21 million in grant money to more than 450 road safety projects,” Mr Rattenbury said.

“These projects have made a significant contribution to improving road safety in the ACT.

“I would like to acknowledge NRMA Insurance for their valuable partnership with the ACT Government over this period and the Trust’s chair, Professor Don Aitkin, for his service in the role over the past decade.”

In distributing the residual funds of the trust, $1.9 million in grants will go to a range of road safety initiatives primarily based in the ACT. This includes two grants of $432,848 to both the Australian National University and University of Canberra to establish two PhD Road Safety Scholarships.

“It is important that we fund road safety research to ensure government can support best practice solutions and initiatives that protect our road users,” Mr Rattenbury said.

The Trust was established in 1992 as a partnership between the ACT Government and NRMA Insurance. However, following the expansion of the compulsory third party insurance market in 2014 to additional insurance providers, the decision was taken to wind it up.

To ensure the continued support of important road safety projects, the NRMA Trust has since been succeeded by the ACT Road Safety Fund established in July 2015, which is funded by contributions levied on ACT vehicle registration by the government.

“The Road Safety Fund distributed about $252,000 in funding last year to a number of vital road safety initiatives,” Mr Rattenbury said.

“Applications for the 2017 community grants program are open until 19 June and I again encourage all individuals and groups with innovative ideas to make our roads safer to apply.”
