Clean energy is the future: ACT joins Al Gore and states in signing climate leadership declaration

Released 13/07/2017

The ACT will today join with Victoria, Queensland and South Australia in signing a Climate Leadership Declaration that calls on all jurisdictions to work in partnership towards zero net emissions, Minister for Climate Change and Sustainability Shane Rattenbury announced today.

Speaking from the 2017 EcoCity World Summit in Melbourne, Mr Rattenbury reaffirmed that while the Federal Government had as yet failed to deliver a clean energy future, states and territories, organizations, investors and communities were “getting the job done”.

Mr Rattenbury will today meet former US Vice-President and current Chair of The Climate Reality Project, Al Gore.

“As Mr Gore reminds us, climate change is one of the greatest challenges facing the Australian community today,” Mr Rattenbury said. “Our jurisdictions are taking strong action now to reduce the risks of climate change, and realise the opportunities the transition to a net zero emission future brings.”

The Declaration showcases climate change mitigation efforts in each jurisdiction, and reaffirms support for Australia’s ratification and implementation of the Paris Climate Agreement.

The ACT is well advanced towards our goal of 100% renewable electricity by 2020, and to achieving zero net emissions by 2050 at the latest,” Mr Rattenbury said.

“The shift to a cleaner economy not only reduces climate risk, but drives new investment and jobs growth. For example, the renewable energy and new energy technologies sectors are some of the world’s fastest growing sectors.

“We will continue to support the orderly transition to a clean, secure, reliable and affordable energy system for all Australians, including working with energy ministers in other states to agree a response to the Independent Review into the Future Security of the National Electricity Market (the Finkel Review), and a pathway for joint implementation.

“We will also look forward to progressing discussions with a view to a meeting of premiers and chief ministers later this year to agree priorities and actions for collaboration on climate change,” Mr Rattenbury added.

Tomorrow (Friday 14 July 2017) Mr Rattenbury will meet with Energy and Resource Ministers from the Commonwealth, each state and territory, and New Zealand at the COAG Energy Council in Brisbane.
