Today ACT Minister for Climate Change and Sustainability Shane Rattenbury joined with ministers from Victoria, South Australia, and Queensland at the COAG Energy Council meeting to call on the Federal Government to push ahead with implementation of a Clean Energy Target (CET).
“Today the ACT joined with our state counterparts in encouraging the Federal Government to follow the leadership of our jurisdictions in adopting a Clean Energy Target,” Mr Rattenbury said.
“We are disappointed that the Federal Government has chosen instead to dither and delay on real climate action, while states and territories including the ACT are busy getting on with the job.
"Last night Ministers heard from a diversity of stakeholders, representing consumers and businesses, who all unanimously called on Governments to be proactive in fixing our broken energy market.
“Despite the Federal Government’s decision not agree to a CET, the ACT and other jurisdictions have called for the Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) and Australian Energy Market Operator (AEMO) to do more work in this area.
"It was noted that AEMO has made significant progress towards preparing our energy system for the upcoming summer, and I hope that they will be able to make a valuable contribution to the design of a national Clean Energy Target.
“The ACT is leading the country with ambitious renewable energy and emissions reduction targets.
“We know from experience that our clean energy targets have generated millions in new investments from local renewable energy industries, and created hundreds of new jobs.
“We’re proud that the Territory is well on track to supply by 100% renewable electricity by the end of the decade, and to achieve zero net emissions by 2050 at the latest.
“This week’s announcement that Tesla will co-locate the world's largest battery storage project at the ACT-supported Hornsdale wind farm is proof positive of the exciting opportunities that are created through ambitious investments in clean technologies.”
Minister Rattenbury yesterday represented the ACT in joining with ministers from Victoria, South Australia, and Queensland in signing the Climate Leadership Declaration, in the presence of with former US Vice-President Al Gore.
