Mount Stromlo high students come up with innovative ways to get moving

Released 25/07/2017

Minister for Education, Shane Rattenbury, visited students at Mt Stromlo High today to present a mountain bike to the winning student as part of the It’s Your Move project, which encourages students to be active.

“Mount Stromlo High has used their interest in technology to implement a Quick Response (or QR) code tagging system that allows the children who are walking or riding to school to scan semi-permanent QR code signs posted at various locations in surrounding neighbourhoods,” said Mr Rattenbury.

“The information goes into a database where names are randomly selected to win a prize at the end of term.  More than 250 students have entered the prize draw since the start of their project, and this is the second bike prize awarded.

Started in 2012 as a partnership between ACT Health and the Education Directorate, the It’s Your Move research project focuses on addressing unhealthy weight in adolescents.

“Phase 1 of the project involved working with three ACT high schools – Melrose, Calwell and Alfred Deakin.  The program was so well received that nine other ACT high schools are now taking part in Phase 2. Participating schools attend innovation workshops and receive approximately $10,000 in funding from ACT Health to develop their own creative solutions for improving student health,” Minister Rattenbury said.

“This project is great as it engages the students to come up with their own ideas, and draws on the knowledge and expertise of students and teachers to develop creative local solutions within the school environment.

“The students and teachers at Mount Stromlo High School should be congratulated for coming up with such a smart and engaging way to motivate more students to walk or ride to school. They are a great example to other high schools and I encourage all high schools to give this great idea a go,” Minister Rattenbury said.
