Know your rights on World Consumer Rights Day

Released 25/07/2017

The Minister for Justice and Consumer Affairs, Shane Rattenbury, took the opportunity on World Consumer Rights Day to remind Canberrans about the power of their consumer rights under Australian Consumer Law (ACL).

The ACL is a single national law designed to ensure that consumers get the goods or services they have paid for. It protects consumers whether they are shopping in-store or online, booking a holiday or signing a consumer contract such as a phone plan or gym membership.

“ACL regulators in each State and Territory work together to protect the interests of consumers and ensure a fair marketplace,” Mr Rattenbury said.

“In the ACT, Access Canberra is the agency responsible for enforcing ACL laws. A key focus is educating consumers about their rights and making sure businesses know about their legal obligations.

“Access Canberra works with other ACL regulators to enforce the ACL and may take action when they identify businesses that breach consumer law. This includes making false or misleading statements to potential customers, high pressure sales tactics, unfair contract terms or selling unsafe products.”

“World Consumer Rights Day serves as a timely reminder for consumers to familiarise themselves about their rights,” Mr Rattenbury concluded.
