Importance of recreation and play championed across government

Released 25/07/2017

To reflect a recent shift in the way people engage in physical activity and in line with Sport and Recreation Services’ renewed focus on recreational opportunities, an Active Recreation and Play Officer has been appointed to help promote and coordinate recreation across the territory, Minister for Sport and Recreation Services, Shane Rattenbury, announced today.

“We want to support a healthy, active and inclusive community by making sure people feel inspired to improve their health and wellbeing. We want more people to see recreation as a fun and easy way to engage in active living,” said Mr Rattenbury.

“The Active Recreation and Play Officer will help to provide better co-ordination and focus to work across various areas of government and the sector to help spread the message about why recreation and play are so important.

“The creation of this role reflects a recent shift in the way people engage in physical activity.  People are busier and have more commitments - many of us no longer have time to commit to organised sport and instead look to less formal activities to remain active and connected within the community.

“In July last year I released a vision for recreation in the territory (Connecting & Building Recreation: a vision for the Territory), which discussed this changing environment and the need to ensure we have proper facilities and support in place to ensure Canberrans can make the most of the opportunities we have available and find new ways to engage people in activity that suits them.

“I’m really keen to get as many Canberrans, and indeed our visitors, to be more physically active and to take advantage of our great outdoor spaces for activity and play.

“A key focus within Sport and Recreation Services over the coming months will be to coordinate the delivery of Nature Play CBR, including the management of online resources, development and coordination of partnerships and direct delivery of Nature Play events and activities.

“Nature Play is a fantastic program that encourages kids and families to get outdoors and play each day, and is already being delivered in several other states, and it is exciting that in the first half of 2016 the ACT will officially join the Nature Play team.

“We’ve got a lot of options for active recreation in Canberra, including a great network of trails, reserves and open spaces, not to mention the Find Fitness Outdoors campaign which encourages Canberrans to take advantage of the many free outdoor fitness locations across Canberra.”
