First school parliament opened at Charles Weston School

Released 25/07/2017

Minister for Education, Shane Rattenbury, has opened the first Charles Weston School Student Parliament and encouraged students to get engaged with how their school is run.

“The Charles Weston School Student Parliament will give students an exciting opportunity to  have a voice in some of the important issues that impact them. I encourage the new members to provide strong leadership and to work to represent all students at the school,” Mr Rattenbury said.

“I encourage students to think hard about their role, to talk with their friends and to come up with new and innovative ideas to help make the school the best place for everyone.

 “This is a great opportunity for students to see how real world democracy and representation work, and an exciting challenge to demonstrate that, if they work hard enough, they can make a difference.

“However, as Spiderman was once told, with great power comes great responsibility.  This is an important aspect of civil democracy.

The Minister also thanked  the teachers of Charles Weston School for their the hard work in establishing the first Student Parliament, and providing  the students with many practical ways to:

  • civics and citizenship in action;
  • concepts such as justice, fair play and what a community is;
  • about how decisions are made in a democracy;
  • how to balance competing needs; and
  • about other people’s points of view.

 “It gives me great pleasure to declare the first Charles Weston School Student Parliament open,” Mr Rattenbury concluded.
