'Everesting' the Arboretum to RECOGNISE

Released 01/11/2014

Minister for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Affairs, Shane Rattenbury, today joined Chris Simspon, from the Wokka Wokka nation (Cherbourg, QLD), for part of his journey to 'everest' the National Arboretum Canberra to promote the RECOGNISE movement and Indigenous health.

'Everesting' involves repeating a hill until you reach the same climbing height as Mount Everest, 8848 metres.

"Mr Simpson is 'Everesting' the Arboretum today in support of RECOGNISE – the campaign to recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the Constitution, and to promote the importance of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health," Minister Rattenbury said.

"He hopes to inspire other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men, to turn their health around and he is leading by example undertaking this momentous ride on a 4.3 kilometre section of Forest Drive," Mr Rattenbury said.

"This ride has an elevation of 120 metres, so he will have to complete 78 laps, or about 335.4 kilometres in total."

Mr Simpson said he wanted to act as a role model for his family and for other Aboriginal men who, like him, have struggled with poor health before taking significant action to improve it.

He is hoping people will join him for a few laps to have a chat about the recognition for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people in the Australian Constitution and Indigenous health. He hopes to finish with his journey sometime later this evening, probably between
6 and 8 pm.

"Tens of thousands of Australians from all walks of life have already declared their support to recognise the first Australians in our founding document because they believe that fairness and respect for all Australians should be at the heart of our Constitution," Minister Rattenbury said.

"This is a journey for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians and non-Indigenous Australians alike, a journey for the whole community and one we must take together.Further information on the RECOGNISE campaign is available at http://www.recognise.org.au/
