One month until Canberra's favourite celebration of cultural diversity

Released 17/01/2018

Preparations for one of Canberra’s biggest parties, the National Multicultural Festival are ramping up a month out from the big event. From Friday 16 to Sunday 18 February 2018 the heart of Canberra will be abuzz with thousands of people enjoying food, music and dance from around the world.

Over the last two decades, the National Multicultural Festival has grown from a small local event to a major celebration of the cultural diversity in Canberra and Australia.

This year, visitors can expect an array of entertainment keeping the young and young at heart partying all weekend.

The pre-opening concert on Thursday 15 February is headlined by Baker Boy. A regular on Triple J, Baker Boy (also known as Danzel Baker), is a Yolngu man from Yurrwi and Maningrida communities in North East Arnhem Land. He is the first Indigenous rapper to rap in Yolngu Matha who has broken into the mainstream. Local Canberra star, Lucy Sugerman from The Voice will join Baker Boy at the pre-opening concert. Lucy and Baker Boy will also appear at the Festival on Friday and Saturday.

Celebrity chef extraordinaire, Poh Ling Yeow will appear twice during Saturday’s program and will also read to kids in the Children’s Sanctuary. I’m sure anyone who watched Poh on Masterchef or her own TV shows since is excited to see her cook up a storm!

Disco legend Leo Sayer takes to Stage 1 on Friday night and will keep festival goers dancing with hits such as You Make Me Feel Like Dancing, When I Need You and More Than I Can Say.

The Festival would not be able to run without the tremendous support from amazing volunteers. More than 150 volunteers have signed up and induction sessions are taking place over the next few weeks to support them in making sure the Festival is a great experience for everyone.

The hundreds of stall holders are also preparing their wares and stocking up on ingredients for their biggest weekend of the year. I’m looking forward to catching up with as many people as possible from the Canberra multicultural community and sharing a snack or two with them!
