Self help organisations and other community groups will continue to receive support for their important work in Canberra’s community thanks to new ACT Government funding delivered in the upcoming ACT Budget.

As our city grows, backing local community organisations is critical to ensuring Canberra remains a supportive and inclusive community that doesn’t leave anyone behind.

SHOUT provides administrative and governance support to organisations like the ACT Down Syndrome Association, Canberra Region Kidney Support Group and Bosom Buddies so that these self-help and advocacy groups can focus more of their time and energy on their members.

The ACT Government provided funding of $70,000 in the 2017-18 Budget to enable SHOUT to continue providing its critical services while it developed a sustainable and long-term funding model recognising the impact of a changing environment due to reforms like the NDIS.

This further investment of $469,000 over four years will provide certainty to SHOUT, recognising its value as core social infrastructure and ensuring the service remains part of our community for the years ahead.

The Government acknowledges the hard work SHOUT has undertaken to consult with members and affiliates about its business model. The recent NDIS Information, Linkages and Capacity Building grant SHOUT received shows this transition is paying off.

The ACT Government currently invests over half a billion dollars a year in support for vulnerable and disadvantaged Canberrans, including for frontline community and disability services. The 2018 Budget will continue this investment by growing services for our growing city, including organisations like SHOUT.
