Joint media release: Gordon Ramsay MLA and Rachel Stephen-Smith MLA

The 2017 National Multicultural Festival includes a new area for people to catch their breath during the fun.

Minister for Veterans and Seniors Gordon Ramsay and Minister for Disability, Children and Youth Rachel Stephen-Smith said the event, which starts today, had taken steps to create places for people to rest.

“The National Multicultural Festival is one of the biggest, brightest and noisiest events in Canberra,” Mr Ramsay said.

“This year we are including Sanctuaries that we have designed for all ages to take a break while still enjoying the Festival.

“Near Stage 7 in Petrie Plaza West there will be a Sanctuary that will have seating, tables and shade for visitors.

“It will also have a strong program of performances to ensure that people can still enjoy the fun of the Festival.”

Ms Stephen-Smith said the Sanctuary was one of a range of measures put in place to make it easier for people with disabilities to navigate the event.

“For people with disabilities, we have also taken other steps such as reducing some of the obstacles that make getting around easier and making sure features such as parking and toilets are better promoted,” Ms Stephen-Smith said.

“This includes remapping generators and electrical wires in order to reduce the number of protective trays covering cables which can be an obstacle to mobility.

“We have developed these ideas with input from people with disabilities and I look forward to making more changes at festivals in the future.”
