Ramadan dinner brings Canberrans together

Released 10/06/2017

Muslim and non-Muslim Canberrans will tonight celebrate Ramadan at Iftar in the City in Civic Square.

Through the ACT Government’s support of Iftar in the City, Canberra’s Muslim community will celebrate with people from numerous other faiths and beliefs. It’s a wonderful opportunity to encourage dialogue and inclusion in our community.

Ramadan is the most significant time of the year for our city’s Muslim community. It is a time of celebration but also a time of restraint and quiet reflection. Opening the Iftar feast to the broader Canberra community allows us all to reflect and consider what we can learn from one another.

Dinner will be served to around 3000 people to signify the breaking of the fast with the event running from 4:30pm to 7:00pm.

This a time for the community to come together to understand and acknowledge that while we may follow different faiths and beliefs, what we have in common is far more important than our differences.

This evening’s event is another demonstration that Canberra is a community that embraces diversity and values the contributions of people of all backgrounds and faiths.
