New information resources to make adoption easier for Canberrans

Released 31/10/2017

The Government has developed a suite of new information resources to help Canberra families better understand and navigate the adoption process in the ACT.

These resources have been developed in response to two recommendations of the Domestic Adoptions Taskforce, after its final report was tabled in the Legislative Assembly in February.

The recommendations regarding communication with stakeholders and information about adoption were a recognition by the Taskforce that the adoption process is a complex and emotional one and can be difficult for all involved, so it is important that we make it as clear as possible to all parties.

Child and Youth Protection Services has made improvements to its operational procedures to ensure a focus is on achieving timeliness and improved communication with prospective adoptive parents.

In addition, a suite of new information aimed at a wide range of stakeholders is available on the Community Service Directorate website.

The new information about the ACT adoption processes is available at

Comments attributable to Minister for Disability, Children and Youth, Rachel Stephen-Smith:

“The Government accepted all Taskforce recommendations, and will continue to implement them in partnership with the community.”

“This information has been written for a non-specialist readership to ensure that information on the domestic adoption process is understandable and accessible to everyone.”

“The information outlines anticipated timeframes and processes to assist prospective adoptive parents to be better informed about what to expect.”

“As always, we welcome feedback from the community on these new resources.”
