New Community Chair to Lead ACT Disability Reference

Released 25/07/2017

I’m pleased to announce Dougie Herd as the new Community Chair of the ACT Government’s Disability Reference Group. Mr Herd brings more than 30 years experience as a disability rights advocate, non-government organisation leader and disability public policy innovator.

The Disability Reference Group provides advice to the Minister on policy development and how to create a more inclusive community.

Mr Herd knows how to effect change for people with a disability and his enduring commitment to removing barriers in society is something all Canberrans will benefit from.

Mr Herd has worked in leadership roles in government and non-government disability organisations, promoting the rights of people with disability. He understands the challenges experienced by people with disability on a daily basis.

I extend my sincere thanks to the outgoing Community Chair, Sue Salthouse, who is due to complete her five year term in September.

Over the next year, the Disability Reference Group will provide advice on the ongoing implementation of the NDIS in the ACT, the National Disability Strategy 2010-2020 and the development of a Disability Justice Strategy.

I look forward to working with Mr Herd and the other new and ongoing members of the Disability Reference Group as we continue to peruse our objective of making Canberra a more inclusive and engaged city for people with a disability.
