Canberra refugee students awarded scholarships

Released 25/07/2017

To mark United Nations World Refugee Day, 53 Canberra students with asylum seeker or refugee backgrounds have received scholarships to help them reach their personal development goals and build a more secure future.

Canberra Refugee Support Scholarships are awarded to asylum seekers or refugees who are studying or seeking to study while they are living in Canberra. Winners are selected on the basis of individual merit, taking into account more than academic performance.

This year’s scholarship recipients are aged from five years to adults, and are currently taking primary, secondary or post-secondary education in the ACT.

The scholarships encourage new learning and competencies and help cover the financial costs of undertaking study. They serve to assist refugees by opening up opportunities and demonstrating the ways in which the shared joy of learning transcends cultures, languages and faiths.

I’d like to thank Canberra Refugee Support for organising this annual event, and local businesses, community groups and individuals for their willingness to make a financial investment in the future of refugees.
