Canberra celebrates the end of Ramadan

Released 24/06/2017

Canberra’s vibrant and diverse Muslim community will mark Eid al-Fitr by attending special morning prayers before a feast of traditional dishes - their first daytime meal in a month.

On behalf of the ACT Government, I send warm wishes to Canberra’s Islamic community on the auspicious occasion of Eid al-Fitr, which celebrates the conclusion of the 29 or 30 days of dawn-to-sunset fasting during the entire month of Ramadan.

I have been honoured to attend a number of Breaking of the Fast Iftar events during Ramadan.

This included the Iftar in the City event which brought together more than 2000 people to share an evening meal cooked by staff and volunteers from local Islamic embassies and missions.

This was a time for the community to come together to understand and acknowledge that while we may follow different faiths and beliefs, what we have in common is far more important than our differences.

As Muslims celebrate the end of Ramadan, let us all use this time to reflect on the benefits of Australia’s rich diversity and know that Australia’s multiculturalism is something that we should all be proud of.

Eid Mubarak!
