Better digital services for Canberra’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community

Released 25/07/2017

oday I was pleased to launch the ACT Government’s new Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Portal (the Portal) at the “Reconciliation In Action – It’s a RAP” Expo at the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cultural Centre at Yarramundi Reach.

The Portal provides a platform for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Canberrans to access information on ACT Government services, initiatives, and events.

This initiative reflects feedback from the community that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people would benefit from a central platform to better connect with the ACT Government.

The Portal is structured around the seven key focus areas of the ACT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Agreement 2015-18: Cultural identity; Healthy minds, healthy bodies; Feeling safe; Connecting the community; Employment and economic independence; Education; and Leadership.

This is a very important time for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders. Today is Sorry Day and a day for reflection for the whole ACT community. Tomorrow marks the start of Reconciliation week and the 50th anniversary of the 1967 Referendum, and 3 June is the 25th anniversary of the Mabo decision.

It was a pleasure to be involved in today’s events, surrounded by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, and to announce the delivery of an initiative realised in the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Portal.

We hope the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Portal will make things just that little bit easier and more convenient for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to connect with the ACT Government.

The Portal can be accessed at www.strongfamilies.act.gov.au.
