ACT Carers Strategy Statement and Carers Voice Panel Report Launched

Released 18/12/2017

In October this year, 49 carers and members of the broader community took part in a deliberative democracy process that will lead to a 10-year ACT Carers Strategy.  Today I am thrilled to launch the result of that process - the Vision, Outcomes and Priorities Statement and Carers Voice Panel report.

The new Carers Strategy will be a framework to better support and recognise Canberra’s 48,000 carers.

The Carers Voice Panel met twice, using a deliberative approach to develop its vision for a carer friendly Canberra. The group identified outcomes the community wants to see for carers, and what our shared priorities should be.

This process could not have happened without the great work done by Carers ACT, democracyCo and of course the carers and members of the community who took part.

I particularly thank the carers for their valuable insights and positive engagement with this process.

I acknowledge the significant amount of time carers have given to guide this work.

Next steps for the strategy include developing actions and initiatives to deliver on the vision, outcomes and priorities.

The final ACT Carers Strategy, including the first three year action plan, will be developed and released in 2018.

This process is another demonstration of the ACT Government’s commitment to strengthening community consultation to ensure Canberran’s diverse views are heard when developing policies and projects.

The development and implementation of a new Carers Strategy was a 2016 election commitment.
