Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Grants Awarded

More than $48,000 has been awarded to 26 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander initiatives under the second round of the 2016-17 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Leadership and Scholarship grants.

These grants provide direct financial support for individuals and organisations to develop leadership skills or undertake study that will boost their employment prospects.

The areas of opportunity being pursued by Leadership and Scholarship recipients are diverse, including:

  • Diploma of Risk Management
  • Diploma of Project Management
  • Bachelor of Law
  • Cert III in Land Conservation & Management
  • Training for a heavy rigid license
  • Exchange program in Japan

The grants are awarded under two grant categories:

  • Leadership Grants: for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the ACT to undertake learning activities that will enhance their leadership skills and abilities to better equip them to lead and engage on behalf of their communities and organisations.
  • Scholarship Grants: for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who reside in the ACT to undertake study and training that will further develop their skills and qualifications to increase their employment prospects.

In the Leadership category, two projects received a total of over $9,400, while 24 projects received a total of $38,800 in the Scholarship category.

The grant programs are part of the ACT Government’s ongoing commitment to the aims of the ACT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Agreement 2015-18.
