Released 25/07/2017

The ACT Government continues its support of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders with over $90,000 in grants for initiatives that highlight and continue important work in the community.

The 2016-17 ACT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Grants Programs provide funding to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people for leadership training and development opportunities.

Grants are awarded in three categories: Cultural Grants, Leadership Grants and Scholarship Grants.

More than 30 grants were awarded for projects including supporting the ACT NAIDOC Family Day 2017, the launch of a second edition of A Pocketful of Leadership in the ACT, and Doctoral research for the project Boarding School Business: The Experiences of Aboriginal Girls Attending Boarding Schools.

The Grants Programs also aim to celebrate the cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders in the ACT by developing innovative projects that contribute to sustainable communities and promote cultural diversity.

It is important to continue protecting and promoting the rich cultures of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the ACT, empowering new leaders and championing opportunities to develop new skills and increase employment prospects.

The Grants Programs are part of the ACT Government’s ongoing commitment to deliver on the aims of the ACT Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Agreement 2015-18.
