Modernisation of Calvary Public Hospital for a growing Canberra

Released 04/05/2018

More modern health services on the northside of Canberra to improve access for our growing community and ensure we have a truly territory-wide health system will be the focus of a new agreement with Calvary Public Hospital.

Minister for Health and Wellbeing Meegan Fitzharris met with Chair of the Little Company of Mary Health Care, John Watkins, today to announce a new agreement will be negotiated to ensure the partnership of ACT Health and Calvary Public Hospital continues into the future.

“Today I’m very pleased to announce that ACT Health and Calvary Public Hospital will begin planning for a shared future that ensures health care services on the northside are modern, integrated and meeting the needs of our growing community.

“This will include consideration of how territory-wide services are delivered and how we best balance the delivery of services across all our public hospitals, including Canberra Hospital, Calvary Public Hospital and the University of Canberra Hospital.

“I’d like to recognise the 40 year contribution Calvary and the Little Company of Mary have made to Canberra. Working together, I’m sure we have many more years of caring for the community ahead of us.”

Minister Fitzharris said negotiations with Calvary will include working together to plan future health services on the northside of Canberra and to optimise territory-wide public health delivery, including future upgrades and new infrastructure investment.

“Already we are working with Calvary Public Hospital to upgrade their maternity unit to make it a more attractive and welcoming place for women to give birth, particularly those who live on the northside.

“Calvary also plays a key role in palliative care here in Canberra, and we will continue to ensure Clare Holland House has the resources it needs to provide end of life care, which is important for our community.

“I look forward to continuing to work with Calvary over the coming months to develop an agreement that ensures the best health outcomes for our growing city,” said Minister Fitzharris.

The Chair of the National Board of Calvary Health Care, The Hon John Watkins AM, welcomed the Minister’s commitment to Calvary through their services at Calvary Public Hospital Bruce and the Specialist Palliative Care Service at Clare Holland House.

“The health care needs of the community have changed over the 40 years we have operated Calvary Public Hospital. We have moved with those changes and will continue to do so, and consider it a privilege to partner with the ACT Government in the delivery of high quality, compassionate and contemporary health and hospital services.

“The basis to our long association has been trust, mutual confidence and the shared recognition that people in need are the focus of our services. I am excited by the prospect of Calvary continuing to work with ACT Health and the ACT Government in the delivery of health and hospital services within a territory wide clinical services plan.”
