Interns maintaining excellence in ACT Health

Released 19/03/2018

ACT Health has welcomed 95 new medical interns into the Canberra health system for 2018.

Minister for Health and Wellbeing Meegan Fitzharris said the program was training the specialists of tomorrow and was a key part of the Government’s plan for Canberra’s health workforce into the future.

“Nurturing medical expertise in the nation’s capital is critical for maintaining and improving patient-centered care in the ACT,” Minister Fitzharris said.

“ACT Health interns have an invaluable opportunity to work with and learn from leading senior doctors in the Canberra region.

“The 95 new interns that have started this year will undertake training and education across the core areas of medicine, surgery and emergency medicine, as well as spending some time on elective specialties.

“They will also have the opportunity to develop their clinical skills and learn more about disease management, pharmacy and multi-disciplinary practice through the Intern Teaching Program.

“Interns rotate through many specialties across Canberra Hospital, Calvary Public Hospital Bruce, Goulburn Base Hospital and South East Regional Hospital in Bega.

“Each has a two year contract to allow them to transition through their resident year before moving to vocational training.

“We’ve seen over 570 medical graduates placed into intern positions throughout Canberra since 2013, which is a fantastic result that has helped to maintain excellence in ACT Health’s patient care and service delivery.”

The 2018 interns commenced in wards on 5 February after completing an intensive two-week orientation.

In addition to the new round of interns, ACT Health has recently welcomed 66 graduate registered and enrolled nurses. Seventeen new graduates from a range of professions have also commenced the Allied Health Graduate Program so far this year.
