Calling all employers – let us know what skills you need

Released 28/08/2018

It’s National Skills Week (27 Aug – 2 Sep) and consultation is now open on the draft 2019 ACT Skills Needs List, to help identify future skills needs and funding priorities for vocational education and training in the ACT.

Minister for Vocational Education and Skills Meegan Fitzharris said the government will use the ACT Skills Needs List to better target the training available to new and prospective students in Canberra.

“The ACT Skills Needs List helps us to attract a productive and highly skilled workforce that contributes to the ACT’s economic future,” Minister Fitzharris said.

“The List is used to help us identify which vocational education and training qualifications may receive government subsidy through specified training initiatives, and the level of subsidy provided for a training place in those qualifications.

“With more than 200 qualifications on the List, there are a lot of skills in the ACT that are in demand, including plumbers, welfare support workers, motor mechanics, hairdressers and gardeners.”

The List is reviewed each year in close consultation with local vocational education and training stakeholders, to ensure it remains aligned with changing skills needs in the ACT.

“Feedback from industry, employers, training providers and members of the wider community is valued and is key to the review, so I encourage all stakeholders to submit their feedback to ensure that government funding is targeted at the skills our community and economy needs,” Minister Fitzharris said.

Consultation will continue until 14 September 2018, to inform the final ACT Skills Needs List 2019 that will be released at the end of September.

Feedback can be provided via the ACT Government’s community engagement platform at www.yoursay.act.gov.au/skills-needs-survey.
