Canberra’s city renewal takes another step forward this week with work to begin on improving the footpaths between the Alinga Street intersection and London Circuit, known as Northbourne Plaza.

The renewal work will focus on fixing the existing footpaths, which will be upgraded to accommodate new and improved pedestrian areas as well as seating, lighting, a cycle path and distinctive formal landscaping.

The Sydney and Melbourne buildings are iconic to Canberra, and the City Renewal Authority has identified improvements to the area around these buildings as a key priority for the renewal of the CBD. Light Rail stage one and stage two present an ideal opportunity to make the right investments to improve the functionality of the area.

Minister for Transport and City Services Meegan Fitzharris said that the development of the Plaza will support our growing city and improve the experience of walkers, cyclists, bus and light rail users alike.

“We are delighted to have been granted approval by the National Capital Authority (NCA) to commence work. The design will complement the heritage values of the Melbourne and Sydney buildings and will encourage the public to enjoy using this space by offering increased outdoor dining options,” Minister Fitzharris said.

The Northbourne Avenue median will be upgraded as part of Light Rail Stage 2. In the interim, the median will be retained in its current form.

The City Renewal Authority will work with the owners and tenants of the Sydney and Melbourne buildings to keep them up to date on the works and to ensure they are a major contributor to the city centre revitalisation effort.
