Street artists invited to paint a wall before community makes the call

Released 31/03/2017

Street artists are invited to express their interest to paint a mural on a city wall above the Cooyong Street skate park with the local community helping to choose the design.

“A formal Expression of Interest (EOI) is now open for all artists to apply to create a new art mural on the city wall,” Minister for Transport and City Services, Meegan Fitzharris said.

“A panel will select three submissions from all entries, which are assessed against criteria including previous experience and a design sketch idea that will reflect the identity of the skate park and its nearby community using a high amount of colour.

“Once the three artists are chosen, they will be asked to submit a final design. The community will then have a unique opportunity to vote for the piece of art work they would like painted on the wall.

“This new artwork will not only help to improve the look and feel of this area but also provide an opportunity for street artists to have their work on display in a highly visible part of our city.

“The ACT Government is partnering with In the City Canberra and also The Canberra Centre to help this dream become a reality for a street artist. A fee of $500 will be paid to each of the three shortlisted artists to assist in their work on a final design with $18,000 to be allocated to the winning artist, which includes their fee, spray paint costs, insurance, protective clothing and other equipment required to paint the wall.

“The public will get an opportunity to vote for their favourite design during April 2017 on the In the City Canberra Facebook page.

“Once the final design is painted on the wall, an anti-graffiti coating will then be applied to help prevent any tagging or vandalism on the artwork.”

As well as the new mural, a new legal graffiti site will also be available at the skate park on nearby walls adjacent to the Angli-Care Youth Centre.

“The ACT Government is committed to providing street artists with the opportunity to practice their art in public places and to reduce the amount of illegal graffiti,” Minister Fitzharris said.

“Currently, there are 24 legal sites in the ACT which primarily consists of underpasses and spillways. This new location at the skate park will provide an opportunity for street artists to have another area to have their individual work on display.

“Local members of the street artist community who are registered with the ACT Graffiti Coordinator have already been approached. I encourage all artists to also consider submitting an EOI,” Minister Fitzharris concluded.

More information on how to register an EOI, which closes on Wednesday 5 April 2017 can be found at www.tccs.act.gov.au
