New grants offering vocational skills and learning opportunities to Canberra adults

Released 22/03/2017

The latest round of grants under the ACT Adult Community Education (ACE) program were announced today, giving the green light to projects that will help break down barriers for people who might find it hard to get a job in Canberra.

Minister for Higher Education, Training and Research Meegan Fitzharris said ten community projects will receive funding through the program to help increase opportunities for Canberrans to access vocational education and training, especially those who have experienced barriers to education and employment in the past.

“Sometimes finding a job or undertaking a full qualification can have its challenges. Through the ACE grants program, the ACT Government will support ten community organisation projects that help participants gain the confidence and skills they need to enter the workforce or undertake a formal qualification,” said Minister Fitzharris.

“This year’s successful organisations offer a variety of programs, and focus on English language skills, basic computer skills, job readiness, general life-skills, and language, literacy and numeracy support.

“Some projects will provide targeted support to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, victims of family and domestic violence, people with a disability, refugees and asylum seekers.

“One project is the Our Way community project, facilitated by the Tjillari Justice Aboriginal Corporation. This project has been provided $15,425 to offer training and support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who may have been victims of domestic or family violence, who care for children who are affected by Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, who have parents battling addiction or parents in prison.

“This is all about creating new pathways for people to get the skills they need to get a job and become part of our community.

“The grants, worth a total of $195,000, highlight the strong community organisations we have in the ACT and their contribution to Canberra’s social prosperity,” Minister Fitzharris said.
