Micro parks competition sparks new thinking for Canberra’s city spaces

Released 30/06/2017

Canberrans will be asked for their feedback to decide which public micro park submission will transition from blueprint to reality, making our small city spaces more inviting, usable and approachable.

For the first time, the public will be asked to contribute both designs and feedback on designs, with the most popular choice then activated in Garema Place by the team at Transport Canberra and City Services.

Minister for Transport and City Services, Meegan Fitzharris said the micro parks project was a unique way for Canberrans to temporarily transform a small pocket of their every-day environment into a suburban paradise.

“This project calls on the community to rethink how we use our public spaces and how we might better utilize them for a new or different purpose,” Minister Fitzharris said.

“If you have noticed a space which might be better used and have a good idea as to how we can make your plans happen, this competition is the perfect outlet.

“You don’t need to be a professional to pitch ideas – but we would like you to be innovative, creative and practical to help us find better uses for our suburban spaces.

The most popular design will be developed and constructed by a landscape architect, in consultation with the person or group who made the submission.

“The micro park is proposed to be installed in Garema Place for approximately two months, after which options to move it to other locations in the city will be investigated,” said Minister Fitzharris.

The Garema Place pop up micro park design competition is now open and submissions will be accepted until 28 July 2017.

The design submissions will be shortlisted by a jury and then put to a community vote to decide an eventual winner. Construction of the micro park is expected to commence in October 2017.
