Minister for Higher Education, Training and Research, Meegan Fitzharris presented the 2017 ACT Australian Apprentice of the Year to Tiffany Davies of Crust Bakery at the Fyshwick Fresh Food Markets.

“I am delighted to announce Tiffany Davies as Canberra’s 2017 ACT Australian Apprentice of the Year, acknowledging her hard work and dedication displayed throughout her apprenticeship, that has seen her flourish in an industry she loves,” Minister Fitzharris said.

Tiffany studied a Certificate III in Retail Baking (Combined) through an Australian Apprenticeship at the Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT).

“The ACT Government is committed to ensuring all Canberrans can access VET courses designed to improve their employment opportunities,” Minister Fitzharris said.

“One of the many training pathways available to Canberrans is an Australian Apprenticeship, which provides students with the opportunity to combine work and study to achieve a nationally recognised VET qualification.

“The ACT Training Awards are about recognising the success of individuals like Tiffany, who is a great example of an apprentice who has learnt directly from industry professionals to become successful in her career of choice.”

Another winner on the night was local business Canberra Connections which was named 2017 ACT Small Employer of the Year. Canberra Connections offers training to its employees to challenge them to learn new skills, equip them with new techniques and technology and offer insight and opportunities within the security, electrical and communications industries.

“It was great to see our local businesses such as Canberra Connections, which currently employs five electrical apprentices engaged in training, being recognised for their commitment to their employees and the ACT’s VET sector.

“Their contribution to the VET sector and the ACT’s economy is invaluable.

“These outstanding achievements by local individuals and businesses are a testament to the quality provision of VET we have here in the ACT and the commitment of students, employers, registered training organisations and industry to develop and support our future workforce.

“I congratulate all of the winners and finalists of the 2017 ACT Training Awards, and I look forward to the continued success of our ACT representatives at the Australian Training Awards in November.”
