Improved medical imaging choices for the Canberra community

Released 06/04/2017

Canberrans will have better access to medical imagery services which help to treat cancers and tumors, with the Canberra Imaging Group officially opening its new scanning facility today.

Minister for Health, Meegan Fitzharris visited the Garran clinic to officially unveil the Positron Emission Tomography/Computer Tomography (PET/CT) scanner.

“I am delighted to launch Canberra Imaging Group’s new scanner, which will support better clinical outcomes for people in our community,” Minister Fitzharris said.

“A PET scan can help detect and monitor cancer and other diseases.  PET scans also detect small amounts of tumour that are undetectable by other imaging procedures, which is helpful when choosing treatment options.

“The information obtained from PET scans can determine what combination of surgery, radiation therapy and chemotherapy is most likely to be successful in managing cancer, and it helps monitor how effective the patient’s treatment has been.”

The scanner is the first of its kind to be installed in a private practice in the ACT, and is one of the most advanced machines within the current market.

With significantly increased sensitivity and clarity in scan images, this equipment will:

  • significantly improve the treatment of prostate cancer;
  • provide more accurate tumour detection while avoiding unnecessary radiation exposure in patients;
  • reduce the need for unnecessary surgery; and
  • allow for more targeted treatment for residents of Canberra and surrounding NSW.

“Through the introduction of this new technology, Canberra Imaging Group has demonstrated its commitment to continually enhancing patient outcomes with the best quality care and equipment,” Minister Fitzharris said.
