Health experts in Canberra to bring preventative health into focus

Released 10/04/2017

The first steps towards developing the ACT’s Preventative Health Strategy moved forward today at Canberra’s inaugural Preventative Health Forum.

Minister for Health, Meegan Fitzharris joined international health experts to put preventative health on the agenda, having made it one of her major priority areas since the start of this new term of Government.

“Bringing some of the world’s leading minds on preventative health together will encourage innovation, new ideas and solutions, to help us guide the strategy and make Canberra a healthier place to live,” Minister Fitzharris said.

“The insights of community groups and key thinkers will help the ACT Government refocus its efforts on addressing major risk factors for preventable chronic conditions, including physical inactivity, poor nutrition, high body mass index, smoking and excessive alcohol consumption.

“Today’s forum represents the first step in a collaborative, cross-sector process to inform the development of the Preventative Health Strategy. I will be asking experts and practitioners to think boldly and creatively about engaging the community and the private sector to focus on ways we can keep improve the community’s health and wellbeing.”

Minister Fitzharris welcomed the participation of internationally renowned public health experts and keynote speakers, Dr Ruediger Krech from the World Health Organisation (WHO) and Professor Rob Moodie from the University of Melbourne’s School of Population and Global Health.

“Dr Krech and Professor Moodie have the experience and knowledge to make a big impact on the way we shape this strategy and I warmly welcome them to the forum,” Minister Fitzharris said.

“The ACT Government is committed to keeping Canberrans healthy. We are working to create a city that supports people to be active, be well and live healthy lifestyles.

“I look forward to engaging further with the community on this important issue.”
