Free bus travel for seniors during Seniors Week

Released 17/03/2017

Seniors Card holders can travel for free on public transport during ACT Seniors Week 2017 (18 March - 26 March), Minister for Transport and City Services Meegan Fitzharris said today.

“Seniors Week is all about celebrating the contribution our senior citizens make to our community. It’s great to be able to offer all seniors free public transport during the week,” Minister Fitzharris said.

“If you have a combined Seniors and MyWay card, you will be able to travel for free during Seniors Week and you won’t be charged when you tag on and off. Those without a combined Seniors and MyWay card can just present their ACT or interstate Seniors Card to the bus driver when boarding Transport Canberra bus services.”

Earlier this year the ACT Government introduced a 12 month trail for free off-peak travel on Transport Canberra buses for senior and concession MyWay card holders (excluding student and tertiary card holders). During Seniors Week, free travel will simply be extended for eligible seniors during all peak periods as well.

“There are several great events for seniors throughout the week including the Seniors Expo at Exhibition Park in Canberra, and we hope the free travel encourages people to get along to some of these events.

“The COTA Seniors Week Expo at EPIC on Thursday 23 March will also be serviced by a free shuttle services being provided by the Flexible Bus Service. The free shuttles will operate from Woden Bus Station (Platform 1), travelling through the City Bus Station (Platform 10), taking passengers to and from the COTA Seniors Week Expo. Free shuttles will be operating half hourly return services to the Expo between 9.30 am to 3 pm on the day,” said Minister Fitzharris.

Over 70 per cent of the Transport Canberra bus fleet now includes easy-access buses, while all the buses in the Flexible Bus Service fleet are wheelchair accessible and offer another way for older Canberrans to travel.

Seniors interested in arranging a combined ACT Seniors MyWay card can visit any Access Canberra Shopfront, ACT Public Library or the Council of the Ageing (COTA) Office.
