Flexible Bus Service picking up in Canberra’s Inner North

Released 08/09/2017

ACT Seniors and people with mobility issues living in Canberra’s Inner North will now have an easy, convenient way to get where they need to be with the Flexible Bus Service expanding from today.

Minister for Transport Canberra and City Services Meegan Fitzharris said a trial of the Inner North Flexible Bus Service was an election promise which would make life easier for Canberrans who might otherwise struggle with short commutes around the ACT.

“The Flexible Bus Service expansion into the inner north region means that this free community service will now be Canberra wide,” Minister Fitzharris said.

“Now, even more ACT seniors and people with a mobility difficulty will have access to the Flexible Bus Service to go shopping, attend medical appointments, visit people in hospitals and take part in social activities.”

The Flexible Bus Service has been successfully operating in Canberra since September 2014. The trial of the inner north service will operate to the current pick-up and drop-off method, allowing passengers to travel to:

The Canberra City Centre, utilising the City Bus Station as a drop off and pick up point

Dickson Shopping Centre

Inner North Medical facilities; and

The Calvary Hospital (upon request or utilising Transport Canberra bus services to the Canberra Hospital).

In addition to this expansion, residents of Molonglo and Hall will also be able to make use of the service from Monday.

The service provides those in the community who have limited access to public transport options, the ability to travel to their local service providers in a safe, reliable way.

Booking for the flexible bus service can be made by phoning 6205 3555. Bookings can also be made via email to fbs@act.gov.au. Bookings must be made two days prior to travel.

Pick up of passengers from suburbs around particular zones commence at 9.30am and return trips start promptly at 1.30pm.

Today’s announcement fulfils the Labor-Greens Parliamentary Agreement commitment to expand the reach and accessibility of the Flexible bus service to the Inner North.
