Courtyard on Anketell Street - an open and refreshed civic space

Released 29/08/2017

The courtyard upgrade on Anketell Street in the Tuggeranong Town Centre has received a facelift, providing a modern and comfortable retreat for patrons and residents.

Minister for Transport and City Services Meegan Fitzharris said the courtyard upgrade, opposite the Hyperdome entrance, is the first stage of works being delivered as part of the upgrade of Anketell Street north.

“The clutter in this Anketell Street courtyard has been removed and a new, open paved space has been provided with more suitable tree species, replacing the old planter boxes,” Minister Fitzharris said.

“A feature light structure highlights the junction of the courtyard and Anketell Street, and new street furniture has also been installed.

“These public realm improvements have helped to improve access to the lake, opening up the area for greater recreational use and creating a more vibrant space where people want to spend time.

“This $530,000 upgrade will be supported by a further $3 million investment in the second stage of Anketell Street works to start in mid-2018. These works will create a safer, friendlier and more easily accessible pedestrian environment.”

The key priorities of the next stage of the Anketell Street north upgrade, between Reed Street North and Pitman Street, include:

  • a raised pedestrian zone and low speed traffic environment
  • improvements to paved areas
  • tree replacement where this is needed
  • improved lighting
  • more furniture along the street.

The configuration of the raised pedestrian zone and the cycle ways will undergo further refinement as the detailed plans are prepared, with construction expected to begin in mid-2018.
