City-wide green bin rollout to be complete ahead of schedule

Released 17/11/2017

Every Canberran who wants a green bin will get one in this term of government, delivering a 2016 election commitment with registrations for Tuggeranong residents opening before the end of the month.

Following a successful pilot in Weston Creek and Kambah, Tuggeranong residents will be able to sign up for green waste collections from Monday 27 November 2017. Their collections will start in January 2018, with Belconnen collections to begin in September 2018, ahead of a territory-wide roll out in mid-2019.

“Every Canberran who wants a green bin will have one by the middle of 2019,” Minister for Transport Canberra and City Services Meegan Fitzharris said.

“This means we’ll complete the delivery of our 2016 election commitment a year ahead of schedule.”

Following the first rollout in the suburbs of Weston Creek and Kambah, green waste bin collections for Tuggeranong are due to start in January next year, covering Banks, Bonython, Calwell, Chisholm, Conder, Fadden, Gilmore, Gordon, Gowrie, Greenway, Isabella Plains, Macarthur, Monash, Oxley, Richardson, Theodore, Wanniassa and Tharwa.

“The pilot has been a big success in Weston Creek and Kambah. We’ve already had more than 8000 homes opt-in for green waste bins since the trial began earlier this year,” Minister Fitzharris said.

Tuggeranong residents will be invited to pay the one-off $50 fee to receive the service with the first bins due to be delivered in early January with collections to start later that month.

“The rollout schedule for the rest of Canberra will see collections start in Belconnen from September 2018, followed by collections across the rest of Canberra from mid-2019 onwards,” Minister Fitzharris said.

Weston and Kambah residents can still opt-in for a green bin. A one-off registration fee of $50 is required with eligible concession card holders exempt from payment.
