CIT ApprenticeLink event opens the door to new job opportunities

Released 08/02/2017

More than 120 job seekers met with local employers yesterday at the first Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT) ApprenticeLink 2017 event to get the inside scoop on opportunities for apprentices and trainees in the ACT.

Minister for Higher Education, Training and Research Meegan Fitzharris helped launch the event and said it was important to find new ways for local employers to connect with apprentices and other potential employees.

“CIT has always been an important piece of the puzzle in the ACT region’s economy by providing the skilled employees that fuel the private sector’s growth and professionally develop our public sector.

“CIT’s strong relationships with employers, built over decades, are what set it apart in the higher education sector. Its focus is on delivering professionally trained employees with the right skills for jobs now and in the future.

“Yestrday’s CIT ApprenticeLink event was a great way to help prospective apprentices and trainees find the career for them by offering one-on-one discussions with a range of employers all in the one place.

“We know there are skills gaps in the ACT, which means there are opportunities for people to earn while they learn – not only in professions like hairdressing, auto mechanics, building and construction but in business administration, information technology, and the health and community sector.  The ApprenticeLink event has helped close that gap, and really inspired people to think about different pathways to a career.”

Minister Fitzharris also launched CIT’s new Apprentice Handbook and CIT Student Association 2017 Diary. The Diary is an early outcome of the Australian Apprenticeship Quality Improvement and Sustainability project which aims to research, identify and implement changes to improve CIT’s delivery of its apprenticeship training.

“This important project is part of the ACT Government’s commitment under the National Partnership Agreement on skills reform under which we committed to structural reforms including developing best-practice, sustainable models to deliver and administer apprenticeships training.

“CIT will begin trialing the project’s research findings this year and, after feedback, fully implement changes to its apprenticeship training in 2018. The result will be much more efficient and effective apprenticeship training for the whole of the ACT,” said Minister Fitzharris.
