Canberra’s first bike barometer to measure cyclist numbers

Released 19/03/2018

The ACTs first bike barometer – an electronic counter to measure cyclist numbers daily and annually – was launched in O’Connor today, providing real time information to the community and government.

“Bike barometers are used nationally and internationally to reinforce that cyclists count,” Minister for Transport and City Services Meegan Fitzharris said.

“The barometer has been installed on one of our busiest cycle paths, at the intersection of the Sullivan’s Creek shared path and Macarthur Avenue. Placed here, the high volume of cyclist commuters helps to reinforce to all cyclists that they are part of a growing community and will encourage others to join the cycle commuting revolution”.

“The position of the barometer on Macarthur Avenue also provides public acknowledgement of the high number of people choosing to commute by bike and clearly presents the cycle count information to passing vehicular traffic on Macarthur Avenue.”

The first bike barometer was installed in Denmark in 2002, and the first in North America in 2012. In Australia, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth have recently installed bike barometers, proving the success of the technology.

Data collected by the ACT counter will help the ACT Government plan future infrastructure requirements for active travel and demonstrate the importance of shared path in the broader transport network.

The installation of the counter is the latest in a range of initiatives the ACT Government is developing to encourage more active travel in the nation’s capital.
