Call for more apprentice mechanics with Transport Canberra

Released 04/10/2017

Applications are now open for people interested in becoming a heavy vehicle mechanical apprentice with Transport Canberra.

Wearing hats for both her portfolios in Higher Education and Transport, Minister Meegan Fitzharris urged anyone with a mechanical mind looking for an exciting career to apply.

“If you are interest in a career in mechanics and in supporting public transport in the ACT, the heavy vehicle apprentice program is for you,” Minister Fitzharris said.

“We are looking to recruit full-time heavy vehicle apprentices and Australian School Based Apprentices (ASBA) to start in February 2018.

“The apprentices will study and undertake practical training with CIT over the next four years to become qualified as heavy vehicle mechanics.”

Apprentices have an exciting opportunity to work on all aspects of Transport Canberra’s fleet from conducting minor servicing and repairs to taking part in completely rebuilding engines and transmissions. Graduates receive a Certificate III in Heavy Vehicle Mechanical Technology.

“It’s never been a more exciting time to work in public transport in Canberra. Over the next four years 80 new buses are being added to our bus fleet,” Minister Fitzharris said.

“We are also currently trialling electric and hybrid buses as part of the bus fleet. While these buses are maintained externally as part of their lease the exposure to these vehicles is a valuable experience.

“Transport Canberra is a great place to work. We are an equal opportunity employer and encourage both women and men from all Indigenous and cultural backgrounds to apply.”

Former Apprentice and Transport Canberra Heavy Vehicle Apprentice Scott Todd said that “Transport Canberra is a very good place to work, with a very supportive environment. I wouldn’t want to do an apprenticeship anywhere else.”

Applications for TCCS heavy vehicle mechanics apprenticeships close this Friday 6 October at 5pm.
