Better town centres & local shops across Canberra

Released 30/05/2017

The upcoming ACT Budget will invest more in better local shopping centres, with the Government delivering on our commitments to invest in the Gungahlin and Tuggeranong Town Centres and Kambah Village.

The ACT Government has already begun work on better public spaces in the Tuggeranong Town centre, and this Budget will go further by investing in stage two of the project to renew Anketell Street, supporting the local businesses in the area.

“The ACT government remains committed to all of our town centres and local shopping precincts, and this investment demonstrates we are doing our part to support the local businesses at these shopping areas”, Minister for Transport and City services Meegan Fitzharris said.

“The Government is making significant investments in each of our five major town centres and this Budget will go further to deliver on our commitments to improve the Gungahlin and Tuggeranong Town Centres.”

Works at Hibberson Street and stage two of the Kambah Village renewal will provide a better shopping experience for the hundreds of Canberrans who frequent these areas every day. Again, this investment compliments work already underway in these shopping precincts.

The Gungahlin Town Centre is set for further renewal to compliment the significant work underway in the area with the construction of stage one of the city wide light rail network and the new Gungahlin Bus station.

The investment in these town centres includes:

Tuggeranong Town Centre

  • $3 million investment for a raised pedestrian zone and low speed traffic environment, new on-road cycle lanes, tree replacement and improved lighting, street furniture, and landscaping.

Kambah Village

  • $2 million for stage two of the renewal projects to deliver new toilets, an upgraded playground with shade structure, extension of the central courtyard spine to the south east side of the shops including new paving, shade trees and seating areas, and a formalised waste collection shelter.

Gungahlin Town Centre

  • $3 million to further improve Gungahlin Town Centre, including pedestrian priority on Hibberson St between Gungahlin Place and Gozzard Street, with work to focus on better access for people walking and cycling and enhanced landscaping in the Town Centre.
