Better access to training for Canberrans of all ages

Joint Media Release with Minister Gordon Ramsay MLA

Limitations which restrict the number of funded courses a person can complete over their lifetime will be lifted to provide better employment and career prospects for all Canberrans.

Minister for Higher Education, Training and Research, Meegan Fitzharris, has announced the changes to improve the career prospects of older members of the workforce.

“This is the Government’s latest reform to simplify apprenticeships and traineeships so they better meet the needs of Canberra’s employers and employees,” Minister Fitzharris said.

“Traineeships and apprenticeships provide a path for Canberrans to have their professional experience and skills formally recognised.

“For example, these changes allow a tradesperson with two apprenticeship qualifications at Certificate III and IV level to upskill through a funded traineeship to a Diploma-level qualification. Diploma level qualifications deliver competencies in leadership, management and supervision skills.

“We know that skilled leaders, managers and supervisors are vital elements in sustaining healthy, adaptable workers and to promote innovation, productivity and change.”

The new measure aligns with the ACT Government’s 2016 election commitment to support mature-age workers to upskill or reskill to pursue a promotion, a new job or a new career.

“The ACT Government’s Active Ageing Framework 2015-2018 Action Plan, supports mature age workers by ensuring same opportunities for recruitment, employment, training and professional development as their younger colleagues,” Minister for Veterans and Seniors, Gordon Ramsay said.

“Retaining the corporate knowledge and experience of mature-age workers makes good business sense.

“The ACT Government understands that subsidising high quality training in areas of skills shortage is important to unlocking disadvantage, empowering people to thrive and pursue a great life and career.”
