Aikman Drive duplication now complete

Released 19/03/2018

The duplication of Aikman Drive in Belconnen is now complete, supporting the upcoming rehabilitation hospital at the University of Canberra due to open in 2018.

Minister for Transport and City Services Meegan Fitzharris said that the duplication was necessary with the expected increase in traffic associated with the new hospital.

“The Government recognised that Aikman Drive would experience increased traffic as a result of the hospital, and I’m glad that we have been able to complete this project ahead the opening of the facility next year,” Minister Fitzharris said.

“These works provide access to the hospital, as well as a range of further improvements to support pedestrians and cyclists.

“The Aikman Drive Duplication also improves access to the growing Belconnen Town Centre, facilitating better public transport into the new bus interchange. The new Black Rapid Bus will travel past the hospital every 15 mins or more often along Aikman Drive.”

Key features of the project include:

  • duplication of Aikman Drive between Ginninderra Drive and Emu Bank;
  • improvements to the intersection of Aikman Drive and Joy Cummings Place for access to the new University of Canberra Public Hospital (UCPH) access road and for residents to the west;
  • a shared use path in the eastern verge of Aikman Drive between Ginninderra Drive and Emu Bank, as well as in the southern verge of Ginninderra Drive between Aikman Drive and Allawoona Street;
  • on road cycle lanes between Ginninderra Drive and Emu Bank;
  • high density native vegetation planting in the Aikman Drive median and eastern verge; and
  • extension of the UCPH east west access road through to Pantowora Street.

“I thank the community for their patience during the duplication works and hope road users are already enjoying the benefits of the duplication,” Minister Fitzharris concluded.
