A more active community hub in the Kingston Group Centre

Released 15/09/2017

Work has now finished to improve the walking and cycling  infrastructure in and around the Kingston Group Centre.

Minister for Transport and City Services Meegan Fitzharris said the work was done to create a more active and accessible community hub for people moving through Kingston.

“This $1 million upgrade will make it easier to travel on bike or foot through Giles Street, Kennedy Street, Eyre Street and Jardine Street,” Minister Fitzharris said.

“Kingston group centre is a vital hub of Canberra’s Inner South so I’m pleased this work has finished to make it safer, more vibrant and more accessible.”

At the intersection of Eyre Street and Jardine Street, a raised platform has been built with a pedestrian crossing on each of its three approaches. As an area of high pedestrian activity, this improvement will give pedestrians priority and improve connectivity between the Green Square and nearby businesses and residences.

Path improvements include a new 2.5 metre wide concrete path on Eyre Street, from Wentworth Avenue to the Kingston Group Centre, which will connect the group centre and the Kingston Foreshore.

Path widening was also undertaken in various locations throughout the Kingston Group Centre to improve accessibility and safety.

“Other improvements include a pedestrian crossing and lighting upgrade at the Giles Street and Jardine Street intersection and new directional signage to make it easier for the public to locate the Group Centre,” Minister Fitzharris said.

These works are part of a suite of active travel infrastructure upgrades that are currently underway in the ACT.

Other projects include the Woden town centre and connecting the Inner North to the City via Lyneham, Turner and Sullivan’s Creek.
