The first stage of works on the $31.1 million project to duplicate Gundaroo Drive will commence today (weather permitting), helping to improve safety and relieve congestion in the growing Gungahlin region.
Minister for Transport and Municipal Services Meegan Fitzharris said the works will be undertaken by Woden Contractors following a period of preparatory works.
“I’m very excited that the first stage of works will get underway today to duplicate Gundaroo Drive from Gungahlin Drive to the Mirrabei Drive and Anthony Rolfe Avenue intersection,” Minister Fitzharris said.
“The duplication of Gundaroo Drive is a key priority for me as the local Gungahlin MLA and as a new MLA, I was proud to present a petition for it to be funded in last year’s ACT Budget, which was signed by more than 1,000 people.
“The duplication works will also include on-road cycle lanes to provide safe passage for cyclists and a new signalised pedestrian crossing will be installed between Gungahlin Drive and Nari Street.
“Public transport will also benefit with the upgrade to the intersection of Gundaroo and Gungahlin Drives to include priority lanes for buses travelling in both directions along Gundaroo Drive.
“To prepare for future duplication of the next section of Gundaroo Drive, the high pressure gas main on the north side of Gundaroo Drive between Nudurr Drive and Gungahlin Drive will also be relocated.
“During these works lane closures will be required, however they will be planned for outside the usual peak period. Reduced speed limits will be in operation to ensure safety for workers and for the travelling public, and diversions will also be in place for cyclists.
“Gungahlin residents and road users in the area will be kept informed during the construction phase with electronic road signage, website information at www.tams.act.gov.au, social media posts and letterbox drops.
“I would also encourage anyone interested in finding out more about our roadworks around Gungahlin to attend one of the drop-in sessions in the Town Centre later this week,” said Minister Fitzharris
ACT Government representatives will host drop-in information sessions outside The Marketplace in Gungahlin for anyone interested in finding out more about Gungahlin’s road projects:
- Thursday 17 March, 5pm – 7pm
- Friday 18 March, 10am – 12pm

Stage one works on Gundaroo Drive are due to be completed by mid 2017.
