What Canberrans were reading in 2016

Released 28/12/2016

It seems Canberrans are a political and tidy bunch who enjoy Game of Thrones and Hollywood blockbusters, according to the list of most popular books and DVDs requested from ACT public libraries throughout 2016.

“This year’s most popular books requested at our public libraries featured an interesting range of fiction and non-fiction titles, including a political biography and two books on tidying up,” Minister for Transport and City Services Meegan Fitzharris said.

“The top 5 most requested books (fiction and non-fiction) in 2016 were:

  1. The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up: The Japanese Art of Decluttering and Organizing by Marie Kondo
  2. Reckoning: A Memoir by Magda Szubanski
  3. Spark Joy: A Master Class on the Art of Organizing and Tidying Up by Marie Kondo
  4. The Road to Ruin: How Tony Abbott and Peta Credlin Destroyed Their Own Government by Nikki Savva
  5. The Natural Way of Things by Charlotte Wood

“The theme of tidying up and organisation carries on from last year, as The Life Changing Magic of Tidying Up was also in the top 5 books in 2015. And it might be a sign of living in the nation’s capital that a political biography has made it into the top 5 books six years in a row.

“Our libraries also offer a great range of DVDs, and the top 5 most requested DVDs in 2016 were:

  1. The Dressmaker
  2. The Martian
  3. Bridge of Spies
  4. Spectre
  5. Game of Thrones: the Complete Fifth Series

“There’s some great films in the top 5, while various seasons of Game of Thrones have been in the top 5 DVDs each year since 2013.

“The range of titles borrowed demonstrates the broad interests of the people who use our public libraries, but also the great range of titles on offer. In addition to books and DVDs for loan, Libraries ACT also provides the community access to free magazines, music downloads, ebooks, wifi, programs, events, and much more.

“Canberrans borrow around 2.85 million items every year from ACT public libraries. It’s great to see our libraries still play an important role in many people’s lives, whether it’s for information, entertainment or education. In 2015-2016 around 1.96 million visitors came through our doors.”
