Triple motorbike parking in Canberra from 1 July 2016

Released 29/06/2016

A plan to increase the amount of motorcycle  parking throughout the city will be trialled for 12 months from 1 July  2016 in a bid to make it easier for motorcyclists and drivers to find a park.

The plan will allow up to three motorcycles  to park in one car parking space, offering motorcyclists more options as the  popularity of motorbikes grows.

“Motorcyclists are currently restricted to  parking in specially designated motorcycle parks or single car parking bays,”  Minister for Transport and Municipal Services Meegan Fitzharris said.

“The change to the parking legislation  means that now three motorbikes will be permitted to park in each car parking  space, a move that in a single stroke triples the number of spaces for  motorbikes throughout the city and frees up car spaces for car drivers.

“As always, riders are asked to be  considerate of others when parking. Under the legislation it is a requirement  that motorcycle riders park in a way that allows other motorcycles that are  already parked to freely exit the same parking bay. Each motorcycle rider will  need to pay the applicable fee to park their motorcycle.

“Motorcycles and scooters are an  increasingly popular form of transport around Canberra. By increasing the  amount of available parking we are also making motorcycle use more convenient  and easy.

“The ACT Government is continually looking  for opportunities to better utilise existing resources and this initiative  demonstrates our commitment to better utilising existing car spaces,” Minister  Fitzharris said.
Further information about the 12 month  trial is available on the Access Canberra website.

Avid motorcyclist and Member for  Ginninderra Jayson Hinder MLA said the trial made sense and would be welcomed  by fellow ACT riders.

“This  is a common-sense reform and a definite step in the right direction. I have  been advocating for further reform in this area and have met with council officials in Brisbane and Melbourne to  discuss their schedule for sidewalk parking to see how we could implement that  scheme here in Canberra,” Mr Hinder said.

“Motorcycles  are a crucial part of our integrated transport plan together with walking and  cycling. We need to get people out of cars and commuting on scooters and  motorbikes. These initiatives will reduce congestion in the city dramatically.”
