A new look and feel for Gartside Street in Erindale is a step closer with the launch today of a concept plan to revitalise the street and make it more people-friendly.
The plans for Gartside Street are now on display at Erindale Library, with the community invited to take a look at the proposed improvements before the construction tender is released later this year. Work is expected to get underway early next year.
“We know how popular Gartside Street shops are for local residents. The plans for Gartside Street propose a design that we think will encourage more people to use the area, and address current traffic, on-street parking and pedestrian safety issues,” Minister Fitzharris said.
“The ACT Government has committed $860,000 to design and construct the Gartside Street improvements, which were identified and consulted on in the Erindale Group Centre Master Plan.
“The objective of the concept plan design is to improve the central section of Gartside Street with traffic calming measures, upgraded verges and the installation of two new pedestrian crossings to improve safety. This work includes widening the southern verge of Gartside Street and reducing the number of driveway intersections to nearby trading areas to assist with limiting traffic conflict points onto the street.
“The plan also includes formalised on-street parking areas, new paving and trees as well as seating and bicycle parking to improve the character of the street and encourage active travel, like walking and cycling.
A drop in information session will be held for anyone interested in meeting with the project team to discuss the plans on-site at Gartside Street between 3 pm and 6.30 pm on Thursday 28 July 2016.
The concept plan also includes details of priority two upgrades that will be considered, and would provide further treatments to support priority one works, extending the works to complete the length of the street.
“The plans for Gartside Street are just part of the ACT Government’s ongoing commitment to renew our suburbs, improve our roads and make it move around our city,” Minister Fitzharris said.
The concept plan will be on display at the Erindale Library until Thursday 25 August 2016 and online at www.tccs.act.gov.au
