Howzat: Prepare to be hit for a six with the Summer Library Program

Released 01/12/2016

Libraries ACT has launched its exciting new summer program starting with a booked-out author talk tonight featuring journalist and former Wallaby Peter FitzSimons at the Gungahlin Library.

“Libraries ACT is thrilled to have such a great summer program, kicking off with Peter FitzSimon’s author talk tonight to discuss his latest book Victory at Villers-Bretonneux: Why A French Town Will Never Forget the Anzacs. There is also lots of interest in an author talk with Australian Cricket Coach Darren Lehmann on Monday night,” Minister for Transport and City Services Meegan Fitzharris said.

“Darren Lehmann will discuss his new book Coach at the Woden Library from 6 pm till 7 pm on Monday 5 December. The book traces Darren’s path to the top coaching job in Australian cricket and the highs and lows of the role. The new books from both Darren Lehmann and Peter FitzSimons are available to borrow from Libraries ACT.”

Minister Fitzharris also reminded people to consider visiting their local library branch over summer and become involved in any of the free programs.

“With the summer holidays only a few weeks away, there is an opportunity for all ages to find something interesting, challenging and enjoyable at your local library,” Minister Fitzharris said.

“Discover how to solve cryptic crosswords with Word Play, find ways to help children learn new languages, take part in story time adventures or get involved in a hands-on family workshop with summer gardening to learn about the life cycle of plants.

“School holiday programs in January 2017 are also expected to be popular with the ScratchJr Kids Coding Club and building bugs and insects using LEDs. Other programs and activities feature the popular stories Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?, Piranhas Don’t Eat Bananas, and The 65-Storey Treehouse.

“All programs are free and some require bookings. For more information about What’s On over Summer, visit the Libraries ACT website at www.library.act.gov.au.”
